The Puget Sound AVA was established in 1995 and is currently the only AVA designation in the state of Washington west of the Cascades. Though the region is expansive, there are only 121 planted acres throughout the AVA (Washington Wine). This region is significantly different from the collection of AVAs that sit in the eastern and southern areas of Washington state, and the wines produced have their own notable distinction.
The Puget Sound AVA stands in stark climate contrast when compared to any of the other AVAs in Washington state. This region is Washington’s coolest and wettest grape growing region. Where the eastern and southern regions are generally noted as arid, the Puget Sound region has a considerable amount of rain. Receiving 15 to 60 inches annually of precipitation (Discover Washington Wine).
The vineyards planted closer to the sound have cooler temperatures than the vineyards that are more inland. Though the region overall has a maritime climate, the cool breezes that constantly run through the region reduce the risk of mildew and rot (Wine Searcher). The elevation of this AVA is diverse, but most of the vineyards are currently planted between sea level up to 600 ft (Federal Register).
The soils in this region are found to be gravelly, sandy loam over glacial hardpan (Washington Wine). The ancient Vashon Glacier deposited sand, silt and rocks over the Puget Sound basin. These remnants from the last ice age have proven to produce high quality grapes (Puget Sound Winegrowers). The slopes in the region provide good drainage and motivate the plants to grow deep roots. Additionally, vines are typically planted in a south or south-west facing aspect with open exposure to sunlight (Wine Searcher).
Of the wines produced, the most notable are Pinot Noir, Madeline Angevine and Siegerrebe (Puget Sound AVA, Washington Wine). Wines of this region are noted as light and crisp with low alcohol content and are said to pair nicely with the seafood also sourced from this region (Puget Sound Winegrowers).
