Lewis Clark Valley AVA

The Lewis-Clark Valley AVA was established in 2016 but has a long growing history. The first vines were planted in the year 1872, with early varietals being Petite Sirah, Petite Verdot and Cabernet Franc (Lewis-Clark Valley Wine Alliance). The Lewis-Clark Valley AVA spans a total of 306,658 total acres, starting in eastern Washington and continuing into western Idaho.

The AVA topography hosts steep canyons, plateaus, the Snake River and tributaries that branch off from the larger river. The AVA is divided at the state’s borders by the Snake and Clearwater rivers and the Bitterroot Mountains make up the terrain of the northern Idaho region. The elevation for the Lewis-Clark Valley AVA is some of the lowest in the state of Idaho (Lewis-Clark Valley Wine Alliance). Most vineyards are below 1,970 ft in elevation and this keeps the vineyards in a micro-climate that is great for growing a variety of grapes (Federal Register National Archives).

The Washington vineyards are nestled in the V-shaped valley that allows for good drainage, as well as protecting from frost. The valley has the nick-name of “banana-belt” due to the mild temperatures, with cooler nights allowing for the grapes to retain their acidity. The region also receives about 11 to 12 inches of precipitation annually, and thus irrigation is not required. The soil of the region is predominantly loess and mollisols from bunchgrass roots. The grassroots assist with retaining water in the soil (Washington Wine).

The AVA has a total of 9 wineries and 16 vineyards (Lewis-Clark Valley Wine Alliance). The top produced wines from the Washington region include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot (Washington Wine). The Idaho vineyards grow over 20 different varietals and the winemakers are still experimenting to see which varieties will be most successful (Lewis-Clark Valley Wine Alliance).
